Der Bundeswahlleiter und sein Stellvertreter werden auf unbestimmte Zeit ernannt. Das Bundesministerium des Innern und für Heimat macht die Namen des Bundeswahlleiters und seines Stellvertreters sowie die Anschriften ihrer Dienststellen mit Telekommunikationsanschlüssen öffentlich bekannt.
